Deborah Ann Wong
WORSHIP LEADER, TRAINER, SCHOLAR
a little about me
My journey in the worship ministry began when I was fourteen and my Sunday school class was tasked to lead the youth congregation in worship. I had very recently begun learning to play the guitar and had never been part of a worship team before, and I agreed to participate on the condition that they would let me sit as far back on stage as possible and leave my guitar unplugged so no one would hear me. Mercifully, my leaders at the time conceded, and I strummed along--truly, for an audience of one.
Over fourteen years later, I have had the privilege of leading and teaching worship across Asia and in the United States, in settings ranging from traditional to charismatic, in settings small to large, in countries where Christians risk their lives by gathering and in countries where Christians exercise great freedom to worship.
As a worship leader, I am passionate about inviting others to taste and see that the Lord is good. As a scholar of worship, I continue to be motivated by this passion, and guided by my sensibilities as a worship leader. While history and theology can be great fun in their own right, my goal as a researcher is to contribute to the renewal of the Church's worship through the training of pastors and worship leaders like myself. I believe that ministry work and academic work is mutually beneficial, and I seek to combine the best resources from the Church and the Academy for the sake of God's glory, and in service of the Church's calling to reflect Christ in the world.
This website is still a work-in-progress (as we all are!), but you can access my CV, read more about my research interests, and check out some other fun things I've gotten to do along the way. If you'd like to get in touch, feel free to drop me an email. I'd love to hear from you!
